What I can do with FMS ?

FMS is an easy to use investment management tool. It basically can support all kind of investment scenarios. It's a central place to track your investment portfolio. All you need to do is to setup a couple of accounts and enter or load the transactions related to the accounts. Your data can be kept as long as you want, you can periodically analyze and review your investment strategy, adjust your asset allocation. One of the coolest things about FMS, it can provide you a well-tested technical buy/sell signals for most of major equities. You can easily make money by just strictly following the signals to buy or sell.

How to use FMS as investment guidance?

  1. Review most recent FMS signals from Watch List, Buy/Sell Signals, or Alerts.
  2. Do some kind of fundamental analysis to consolidate the choices.
  3. Take into any upcoming company events into consideration, e.g., avoid short a stock just before the dividend ex-date.
  4. Place market orders or limit orders close to the current closing prices.
  5. Once the positions are acquired, place stop limit orders depends on your risk tolerance. If you can tolerate a loss as high as 38.2%, leave it to FMS to give you the signal.
  6. Take actions according to new singles received for the existing positions.
  7. Consider exiting your positions with market orders when the FMS plans change.

    Note: only human intervention is required in step 2. The automatic trading system feature is based on above guidance and Interactive Broker's APIs.

Too many signals, both longs and shorts, which I should choose?

  • When market is clearly in a upper trend, choose long signals.
  • When market is clearly in a down trend, choose short signals.
  • When market trend is not clear, keep your portforlio with equal amount of longs and shorts.
  • Disregard and discard any signals that are the results of acquisition, dividend, or other artificial causes that haven't been taken into consideration by the system.

Do I need provide payment information to get the free trial?

You don't have to. But we encourage you to provide one so your account can be moved from trial mode to real user mode promptly and smoothly.

Why my option symbol doesn't match the company name?

Unfortunately, due to the dynamic naming scheme and volatility of the particular stock, the option symbol can't keep uniqueness under certain condition, and this will cause the mismatch in a software system. According to Options Symbology Initiative (OSI) on June 23, 2008, we use the following format for option symbol:
<root symbol>-yymmdd[C/P]99.99
e.g.
Oracle January 22, 2011 32.5 Call ==> ORCL-110122C32.5

Can I fully rely on the FMS buy/sell technical singals to make investment decisions?

Even if we try our best to ensure singals are genearted accurately, but you should always do some du-diligence to avoid following situations:

  • After split, dividend, or other company events, stock chart may give wrong signals. FMS system will detect the error automatically, but there could be a delay.
  • Data retrived from our supplier may be not reliable for various technical reasons.
  • In some extreme rare cases, signals may be wrongly generated due to software bug.
Some kind of fundalmental analsys may enhance your chance of success depends on your investment horizon.

Why my records are rejected in the transaction loader?

If you use position based data file, please make sure tabs are not supported. Use space instead!

The report looks not right, what I should do?

The report is only as good as your data. A couple of tips:

  • make sure your data is consistent and make sense.
  • use correct transaction type, e.g. use 'short' instead of 'sell' if it is the case, and vice versa for 'cover' instead of 'buy'.

How to make sure GIC interest is handled properly?

For the GIC interest payed at maturity, it should be either included in the redeemed amount, or as a seperate transaction; for intermediate interest distribution, it should be treated as a seperate transaction. Also please note:

  • For GIC, the price should be always 1 for the buy transaction; the extra amount above 1 is considered the interest ratio for a redeemed GIC.
  • The Interest report for Tax Return only covers non-taxable accounts.

Why my transactions in practise account don't show up in analysis tool and report?

Practise account is provided for you to pratise your trading skills, you can see its gain/loss in both the Current and Historical Portfolios, Account Balances, and Investment Growth pages; but it is not inlcuded in Asset Allocation and some of the more serious Reports.
